Thesis cover for Quirine Fillekes. Goal thesis; the improvement of HIV-treatment for HIV-infected children and pregnant women in Africa. Women often have to walk for days to get medication for them and their children. This medication often must be stored in a refrigerator. This is a problem for people who do not have electrical power at their disposal. Research on HIV medication often involves expensive drugs, which are not available in developing countries.
The dissertation is in part about examining the addition of an additional drug in simple, available & affordable methods to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Also, it is about improving HIV treatments for children in developing countries: new, appropriate HIV drugs are evaluated, and the dosage guidelines for these HIV medicines for the children are evaluated.
(Part of the) conclusion: there are good alternatives available, but there is still much research to be done for cheap and second-line (and third-line) HIV drugs for children. Research and practice must be brought closer together. There is still a long way to go…
